Development and requirement
China developed the ZBD-04 during the late 1990s as a successor to earlier Type 86/BMP-derived infantry vehicles. The vehicle was intended to provide protected troop transport, direct fire support, and the ability to engage armored targets. The baseline version entered PLA service in the 2000s and was followed by the ZBD-04A, which changed the protection and mobility balance. 1, 2
Design and fighting role
The ZBD-04 uses a two-man turret with a 100 mm gun and 30 mm autocannon, giving it a weapon mix broadly comparable in concept to the BMP-3. Baseline vehicles have strong amphibious features, including waterjets. The ZBD-04A adds protection and updated electronics while reducing the emphasis on high-speed open-water movement, reflecting a shift toward survivability for land combat. 1, 2
Service and evolution
ZBD-04 and ZBD-04A vehicles equip PLA mechanized formations, and the chassis supports antitank, command, reconnaissance, and recovery variants. Export-related designations such as VN11 and VN12 appear in open sources, but the archive distinguishes domestic service vehicles from marketing names and avoids treating every turret or mission package as a new family. 1, 2
Archive boundaries
The ZBD-04 and ZBD-04A are grouped because the latter is an evolutionary redesign of the same IFV lineage. ZBD-05 is kept separate because it is a different amphibious assault vehicle optimized for high-speed water movement. 1
