Origins and design
Developed from a Lanchester touring-car chassis in late 1914, the vehicle reflected lessons learned by Royal Naval Air Service armored-car detachments operating around Dunkirk. A fully enclosed armored body and turret replaced the more improvised arrangements seen on some of the earliest wartime cars. 1
Operational use
Lanchesters deployed to France in 1915 and later served with allied users including Imperial Russia. Britain eventually simplified its armored-car fleet around other patterns, but the Lanchester remained part of the rapid pre-tank experimentation that defined armored mobility early in the war. 1
Reconnaissance role and lineage
This profile specifically covers the 1914–15 First World War design. The much later six-wheeled Lanchester Mark II was a different interwar vehicle and should not be silently substituted for it in the archive. 1
