Type 15 / VT5 light tank family

The Type 15 / VT5 family represents China's modern answer to the tactical problem that heavy main battle tanks are not always the best armored answer in mountain, plateau, jungle, waterlogged, or under-bridged regions.

Historical overview

The Type 15 / VT5 family represents China's modern answer to the tactical problem that heavy main battle tanks are not always the best armored answer in mountain, plateau, jungle, waterlogged, or under-bridged regions. The domestic ZTQ-15, also publicized as the Type 15, is a modern light tank with a 105 mm rifled gun, automatic loading, a crew of three, modular/add-on armor, modern sights, and a compact powerpack in a vehicle far lighter than Type 96- or Type 99-family main battle tanks. The safest conclusion is that Type 15 is a fielded PLA light tank and VT5 is an exported derivative, but fine-grained technical and quantity claims remain less certain. Type 15 is not a substitute for a heavy MBT in direct frontal combat against modern 120/125 mm tanks, but it gives Chinese forces a credible direct-fire armored system in terrain and infrastructure where heavy MBTs are difficult to move, support, or deploy. Some English-language sources call Type 15 a light main battle tank. Its role is more specifically shaped by roads, bridges, altitude, and ground conditions that hinder heavy MBTs. Its armament supports direct fire and infantry support, while its protection and mobility priorities differ from a heavy tank’s. The Type 15 / VT5 follows a conventional modern tank layout: driver in the front hull, a two-person turret crew under an autoloaded main gun, and a rear powerpack. Domestic Type 15 and export VT5 vehicles show visible differences in the front hull and driver's position in some photographs, suggesting that VT5 is not simply a designation decal on an identical domestic hull.
