An emergency proposal, not a combat tank fleet
The Schofield tank was a New Zealand wheel-and-track experiment developed under the pressures of wartime defense and uncertain access to imported equipment. Its history belongs to prototype design, trials and evaluation, not to an operational tank regiment. The attraction was straightforward: travel efficiently on roads using wheels, then use tracks where ordinary road movement became difficult. The program refer to distinct categories into development stages. The accounts distinguish a wooden mock-up, a functional machine-gun vehicle made with mild steel and an improved gun-armed prototype. Its indexed count for the final vehicle does not mean that only one physical object existed throughout the entire program. Nor do these stages automatically justify several completed variant articles. Schofield was not a version of the Bob Semple tank, despite their shared national and emergency context. Local initiative under changing strategic pressure
The project emerged in 1940, when New Zealand's defense preparations were shaped by the war in Europe and uncertainty over British equipment supply. The later expansion of war in the Pacific intensified regional concerns, but it cannot be projected backward as the sole original cause of the design. Schofield's proposal attempted to use locally accessible automotive resources while offering tracked movement as well as road mobility. Early layouts and the changeover mechanism evolved through testing. The machine-gun prototype had a rearward turret arrangement that restricted useful fire in some directions, and development required more than mounting an armored body on existing running gear. The cited accounts do not firmly establish the exact workshop sequence and the designer's geographic associations. From machine guns to a turreted antitank weapon
The early functional vehicle provided a way to test the concept but did not possess the characteristics of the final gun-armed prototype. Its machine-gun armament limited the intended fighting role, and its mild-steel construction cannot be equated with tested armor plate of the same thickness. The improved configuration adopted a 2-pounder gun and a Besa machine gun in a more useful turret arrangement. Two modes of movement, several unsettled measurements
Wheel-and-track operation was the program's defining engineering problem. The intended benefit was rapid road travel without surrendering the ability to move over poor ground. The later vehicle's changeover arrangements differed from those of the earlier prototype, so photographs of one stage cannot reliably explain the other without qualification. Several published figures need especially careful treatment. Published accounts give a 90 horsepower claim alongside a 29.5 rating whose basis is not securely identified. These cannot be reconciled by assuming they are the same measurement in different units. Its range accounts also include an inconsistent pairing of miles and kilometers. Evaluation rather than operational service
New Zealand authorities evaluated the project, and the final prototype was sent to Britain in 1943 for assessment associated with the Department of Tank Design. That journey was a test and procurement event, not an export sale or an overseas combat deployment.
