Purpose and family boundaries
The Renault R35 family grew from the French infantry requirement to replace the Renault FT with a more modern protected vehicle. Its intended job was close support, not the fast cavalry mission assigned to other French designs. The compact hull, substantial armor for its size, and two-man crew made it a distinctive answer to that requirement, but also imposed limits on visibility, command, and weapon handling. Sources

Later long-gun vehicles are often called R39, although Published accounts describe that designation as uncertain rather than universally official. The R40 combined the longer SA 38 weapon with a different suspension developed by AMX. Development and procurement
The account traces the program through Renault's ZM work in 1934–1935 and the infantry's search for a tank with improved protection. Armor requirements increased during development, with the familiar production vehicle associated with roughly 40 mm-class protection rather than the earlier 30 mm requirement. The first order for 300 tanks is placed in late April or early May 1935 by different accounts. Deliveries followed in 1936; the exact contract date remains a documentary question. Sources
Production proceeded while the practical shortcomings of the early vehicle became more apparent. Better armament and running gear did not arrive together across the whole fleet. The SA 38 installation addressed limited gun performance, while the AMX suspension addressed cross-country handling. Layout, protection, and crew work
The hull used cast armored sections, with the driver forward and the engine behind the fighting compartment. Its compact dimensions helped concentrate armor around a small crew, but the turret commander also had to observe, select targets, aim, load, and fire. Nominal armor figures in the cited sources range around 40–43 mm for the thickest areas. These are not uniform values for every surface, opening, or casting. Weapons and mobility
The baseline SA 18 gun and coaxial machine gun suited a small infantry-support tank but offered limited ability against more demanding armored targets. Replacing the short gun with the SA 38 improved the weapon installation without removing the problems created by a one-man turret. The R40 combined that improvement with revised running gear. The usual technical envelope is approximately 10–10.6 tonnes, an engine output of about 82–85 hp, and a road speed near 20 km/h. These figures describe a slow support vehicle, not a fast exploitation tank. Range estimates around 130–140 km depend on configuration and operating conditions. The account highlights running-gear and cooling difficulties, especially in demanding foreign service. Production, rearmament, and counting
The production record is not ready for a single reconciled total. One working baseline is about 1,540 R35s, while other figures reach 1,601, 1,670 or more, or 1,685 depending on the source and apparent Estimates for the R40 also vary, commonly around 120–145. The same caution applies to captured equipment. Hundreds of R35s fell into German hands, but captured inventory, functional tanks in direct service, and chassis used in conversions are different quantities. Figures for Romanian procurement also differ, with 41 and 45 appearing in the available evidence. Combat and subsequent operators
Polish vehicles entered an urgent operational setting after late delivery in 1939. Accounts describe a force that had little time to integrate its new equipment. In France in 1940 the R35 mainly served with infantry tank units. Its protection could be useful against some light weapons, but speed, the short gun, commander workload, and coordination difficulties limited its usefulness in mobile fighting. German use included security, training, towing, engineering tasks, and self-propelled-gun conversions. The often-cited 4.7 cm anti-tank conversion was an expedient use of existing hulls. It did not turn the slow chassis into an ideal new tank destroyer. Italy received captured vehicles through Germany and employed them in Sicily. The Romanian R35/45 and historical significance
Romania's R35/45 conversion attempted to give the small tank a more effective anti-tank weapon. Accounts describe a captured Soviet 45 mm 20-K gun fitted in the French turret, with the coaxial machine gun removed. It places a prototype in early 1943 and gives 30 conversions completed by June 1944, while retaining conflicting figures elsewhere for review. This was a rebuild program within an existing fleet. The family's importance lies in the contrast between numerical availability and operational flexibility. The R35 modernized armor and automotive equipment compared with the FT, but retained the very small crew and restricted turret workspace. The longer gun and improved suspension addressed specific weaknesses without erasing those structural limits.
