A cavalry combat tank, not an AMR
The AMC 35, also known as Renault ACG1, was developed for the French Cavalry's combat-tank role. The common working weight is 14.5 tonnes and the maximum armor thickness approximately 25 mm. Those values do not justify importing a thicker figure from another French tank or treating the maximum as uniform protection. Armament and configuration-specific equipment
French vehicles are associated with the 47 mm SA 35 and a 7.5 mm machine gun. The Belgian configuration used a 47 mm FRC weapon and a different machine-gun arrangement, although the accounts give conflicting descriptions of that secondary armament. The Renault four-cylinder engine is commonly given as 180 hp or CV in the supplied references; the unit labels cannot be silently treated as identical measurements. Published road speed is around 42 km/h, with range dependent on the cited fuel and operating assumptions. Rubber-sprung running gear and mechanical reliability were persistent concerns. Belgian turret procurement adds a separate complication. Turrets intended for tanks or used in static positions do not necessarily correspond to additional completed ACG1s. French park inventories in May 1940 similarly describe a dated disposition, not the lifetime production total. The industrial material supplies a framework for checking contracts, deliveries, armament integration, and acceptance. French and Belgian service in 1940
Belgian vehicles fought during the German invasion in May 1940. Secondary accounts describe a small operational group, antitank-fire losses, mechanical failures, and the surrender of survivors. The photograph near Zwyndrecht documents a particular vehicle and occasion, not an entire unit’s loss record. Sources
French employment was improvised and dispersed among small cavalry groupings. The account cites fighting at Serches in June and the Loire defense context around Saumur. These accounts show actual use, not a tank that remained wholly absent from combat. Nevertheless, limited numbers, uneven readiness, crew preparation, communications, and repair support constrained what could be achieved. Assessment without a lost-decisive-tank claim
The two-person turret and 47 mm weapon were important strengths relative to the vehicle's size and period. They offered a better division of fighting tasks and more useful firepower than a machine-gun reconnaissance vehicle. The published assessment is nevertheless qualified: mechanical trouble, modest protection, low availability, and fragmented employment sharply limited the practical value of those advantages. Sources
A counterfactual claim that simply building more AMC 35s would have transformed the 1940 campaign is not supported by the available evidence. Scaling production would also have required a more reliable design, integrated turrets and armament, trained crews, and a functioning support system.
