Historical overview
The Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, usually called Tiger II and often translated by Allied troops as King Tiger or Royal Tiger, was a late-war German heavy tank built around the high-velocity 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 gun. It represented the extreme end of the German heavy-tank line: a vehicle optimized for frontal protection and long-range anti-tank fire, but too heavy, complex, late, and resource-intensive to alter the strategic balance of 1944-1945. Its importance lies less in strategic results than in the sharp contrast between tactical power and operational fragility. The Tiger II could be a terrifying defensive or counterattack asset when dug in, supplied, recovered, and operated by trained crews. Related vehicles often confused with the Tiger II include Tiger I, Panther, Jagdtiger, VK 45.02(P), Henschel VK 45.03, and postwar museum composites or restored display vehicles. The terms "Porsche turret" and "Henschel turret" are convenient but imprecise: the early curved-front turret was a Krupp turret originally associated with the Porsche chassis proposal, while the production turret was also a Krupp design mounted on the Henschel production chassis. Design and performance
Conventional German late-war heavy tank layout: front driver and radio-operator/machine-gunner, central fighting compartment and turret, rear engine, front transmission/final-drive system, rear engine deck, and wide combat tracks. The five-man crew normally consisted of commander, gunner, loader, driver, and radio-operator/hull machine-gunner. The front-drive arrangement kept major driveline components in the nose, which improved access to some parts but also concentrated weight and vulnerability in an already overburdened vehicle. Sources
The front armor was the tank's defining defensive feature: sources regularly cite 150 mm on the upper glacis and about 180 mm on the production turret front. Side and rear armor were much less dominant, typically around 80 mm. The standard engine was the Maybach HL 230 P30 gasoline V-12. Postwar and museum sources commonly list 700 PS or roughly 690 horsepower; the U.S. Wartime manual gives 590 hp at 2,600 rpm. The discrepancy probably reflects rating method, intelligence uncertainty, or sustained versus maximum output. The Tank Museum states that the type was first used during the Normandy campaign in 1944, while the Musée des Blindés page identifies first combat in July 1944 Normandy. Operational debut stories often center on schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503 and the fighting around Operation Goodwood, but exact day-by-day claims remain uncertain because wartime reports, unit diaries, and postwar photo captions do not always align. France, August 1944: Tiger II 104, now at The Tank Museum, was built in July 1944, issued to 1st Company, SS Heavy Panzer Battalion 101, and abandoned near Aux Marais on 29/30 August according to the museum's revised research. Sources
Ardennes, December 1944-January 1945: Tiger IIs participated in the German Ardennes offensive, but fuel, road conditions, Allied interdiction, and recovery limits sharply constrained heavy armor. Sources
Tactical strengths were clear: long-range armor penetration, heavy frontal protection, psychological effect, and the ability to stop or disrupt Allied armored thrusts when positioned well. Weaknesses were equally clear: slow concentration, poor strategic mobility, vulnerability to flanking and artillery/air-enabled immobilization, and heavy dependence on recovery vehicles, fuel, spares, and experienced crews. Overall battlefield value: high at the tactical point of contact, especially in defense and long-range firing positions; medium-to-low at the operational level because too few vehicles existed, and too many were lost or neutralized by non-duel causes; strategically negative or at best marginal because the program consumed scarce resources without reversing Germany's deteriorating war position.
