Neuer Kampfpanzer / NKPz

The Neuer Kampfpanzer, usually abbreviated NKPz or NKPZ, was Switzerland’s last major attempt to create a national main battle tank after the Panzer 61 and Panzer 68 families.

Historical overview

The Neuer Kampfpanzer, usually abbreviated NKPz or NKPZ, was Switzerland’s last major attempt to create a national main battle tank after the Panzer 61 and Panzer 68 families. It was not a service tank in the ordinary sense. It was a development program, design proposal, and procurement option that reached a mature conceptual presentation but was not taken into serial production. The most reliable public summaries identify the Swiss armaments group, the Gruppe für Rüstungsdienste, as commissioning Contraves AG in summer 1978 as general contractor for a new tank intended to replace the Panzer 68 fleet from the beginning of the 1990s. Its importance lies less in battlefield service and more in procurement history. The NKPz sat at the intersection of Swiss industrial self-reliance, Cold War armored doctrine, political trust in domestic arms programs, and the rapidly rising cost of third-generation main battle tanks. The program was caught by the Panzer 68 scandal, which had revealed embarrassing defects in Switzerland’s existing domestic MBT. In that atmosphere, the risks of another indigenous tank were judged too high, and the Federal Council suspended the NKPz in December 1979. Sources

The design itself appears to have been ambitious: a front-mounted engine, rearward turret, 120 mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun, compact crew arrangement, automated ammunition handling and special/modular armor are all reported in secondary technical sources. Those features would have put the proposal into the conceptual neighborhood of late-1970s third-generation MBTs and the emerging debate over crew protection and ammunition isolation. The evidence for the exact implementation is weak in open sources, however; most detailed data comes from scanned article fragments, forum discussions, or inaccessible technical pages rather than official GRD/Contraves documents. NKPz was a historically significant cancelled Swiss MBT program, not a combat-proven tank. It marked the end of the Swiss domestic tank-development line and helped define the procurement problem that led to the Panzer 87 Leopard 2. It is described as an advanced proposed design with unresolved prototype status, not as a fielded vehicle or a fully validated prototype. [CH-1989/90] Sources

Accounts differ over how far NKPz progressed. Plans, models or mock-ups, and proposals are documented, but neither series production nor a complete working tank prototype is firmly established. References to component development do not by themselves demonstrate that a complete prototype was built. Sources

Switzerland entered the Cold War with a defense posture built around armed neutrality, territorial defense, dispersed mobilization and the need to fight in constrained terrain. Armor still mattered: mechanized formations were expected to counter incursions, exploit mobility corridors and hold key operational spaces. The Swiss tank industry had already produced the Panzer 61 and Panzer 68, proving that domestic development was possible, but also revealing the strain that a small neutral state faced when it attempted to keep pace with the larger armored-vehicle industries of NATO and the Warsaw Pact. The immediate predecessor problem was the Panzer 68. Swiss Army and museum sources describe the Panzer 68 as an evolutionary improvement over earlier Swiss tanks, with series production and deliveries during the 1970s. It received a stabilized gun, a conventional 7.5 mm machine-gun arrangement in place of earlier Panzer 61 features, and later a larger turret in the Panzer 68/75 batches. The broad picture is clear: Switzerland had a domestically built MBT, but its design basis was rooted in the previous generation of tank technology. Sources

The Panzer 68 scandal is essential background. Public Swiss historical summaries state that technical deficiencies became politically damaging and that the fourth production series was stopped while a V80 defect-correction program was introduced. Lenzin explicitly links the NKPz presentation—plans and a wooden model—to the period of the Panzer scandal, and states that the controversy made NKPz risks appear too great. Sources

The strategic requirement did not disappear. Switzerland still needed to replace the aging Centurion fleet and eventually modernize or replace the Panzer 68 fleet. By the late 1970s, third-generation MBTs such as the Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams were moving from development into fielding. Against that background, the NKPz became the domestic alternative to buying or license-building an established foreign design. Sources

Publicly available sources point to several overlapping development phases. In the 1970s Switzerland studied options for a new Swiss tank. In summer 1978, the Gruppe für Rüstungsdienste commissioned Contraves AG to act as general contractor for realizing a new MBT to replace the Panzer 68 fleet from the early 1990s. That program name was Neuer Kampfpanzer, abbreviated NKPz or NKPZ. Sources

The first public or official presentation described in open sources appears to have consisted of plans and a wooden model, not a functioning armored prototype. Lenzin says this presentation unfortunately occurred during the Panzer 68 scandal. OG Panzer states that although the tank was never built, its forward-looking concept was already far advanced when the program was aborted in December 1979. Sources

The exact level of engineering maturity remains disputed. A 2024 post by a knowledgeable participant in the Secret Projects forum asserts that no components were made, that Contraves’ 1979 pitch sought funding for six prototypes—two for industry and four for the Swiss Army—and that the first prototypes would have appeared in 1982 if the funding had been approved. It is nevertheless compatible with the stronger sources that emphasize a wooden model and cancellation before construction. [SPF-2006/2024] Sources

After cancellation, the procurement problem shifted to foreign candidates. Lenzin summarizes the subsequent selection as a competition between the American M1 Abrams and the German Leopard 2, with Leopard 2 favored because of its 120 mm smoothbore gun and because the Abrams gas-turbine drive was considered less suitable or insufficiently mature for Swiss conditions. Other secondary leads mention broader initial approaches to Germany, France, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States, with trials later narrowed to Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams. The final procurement outcome was Panzer 87 Leopard 2. A Swiss federal audit/finance report states that the 1984 armament program approved acquisition of 380 Leopard tanks and that by 1989, 150 had been delivered to the troops. A 2010 Swiss Federal Council notice confirms the Pz 87 Leo was procured for mechanized formations and refers to surplus Pz 87 sales. [CH-1989/90] Sources

Design and performance

Technical caveat: Almost every specific technical value for NKPz in open sources represents design intent or reported specification, not as measured data from an accepted prototype. Official Swiss/Contraves design files would be needed to validate dimensions, armor, autoloader arrangement and powertrain model. Sources

The strongest recurring design feature is a front-mounted engine with the turret shifted rearward. That made the NKPz visually and conceptually different from the conventional Leopard 2/M1 Abrams layout and closer, at least in broad arrangement, to front-engine protected-layout ideas often associated with the Israeli Merkava. The comparison is only architectural: no source proves direct lineage or copying. A front power pack could improve crew protection against some frontal threats, but it would also complicate cooling, maintenance access, driver arrangement and weight balance. Published images and descriptions show or imply a sharply sloped glacis, pronounced side-skirt coverage and a compact hull. Dimensions circulated in secondary sources give an overall length of about 8.508 m and a hull length of about 7.725 m, with width of approximately 3.63 m with skirts and 3.455 m without skirts. The turret was reported as rearward, compact and associated with automated ammunition handling. Forum discussions distinguish at least two visual concepts: an “egg-shaped” or rounded early concept and a more angular or square-turret version. This suggests an evolving conceptual family or several drawings rather than a single locked production configuration. [SPF-2006/2024] Sources

Secondary discussions mention spaced or special armor, sometimes even comparing it to composite/Cobham-type ideas, but this is not well sourced. NKPz was intended as a modern main battle tank, but the cited sources do not establish its exact armor composition, thickness, weight distribution, or separation of crew and ammunition. The most consistent armament claim is a 120 mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun, reportedly with 50 rounds. This matched the firepower direction that also made the Leopard 2 attractive to Switzerland; Lenzin notes that the Leopard 2’s 12 cm smoothbore gun was a strong argument against the 105 mm-gun M1 evaluated at the time. Reported secondary weapons were a 7.5 mm coaxial machine gun and a 7.5 mm ring-mounted or anti-aircraft machine gun. This follows Swiss ammunition and machine-gun practice of the period, but exact mounts and ammunition stowage are not verified. [SPF-2006/2024] Sources

NKPz is often described as using an automated loading or automated ammunition system. Some secondary claims state that 44 of 50 rounds were in automated stowage; others simply list 50 rounds. The difference may reflect preliminary design iterations or later interpretation. The reported position is that automatic loading was central to the concept, but the exact loader architecture remains unverified. [SPF-2006/2024] Sources

The vehicle is commonly credited in secondary sources with advanced fire-control and night-fighting equipment, sometimes including thermal imaging. These claims are plausible for an advanced 1990s-oriented MBT but remain uncertain without GRD/Contraves documents or a contemporary technical article. Comparatively, the later Panzer 68/88 program focused on improving fire control, and the Panzer 87 Leopard 2 embodied the modern fire-control standard Switzerland ultimately bought. Sources

A V12 diesel of roughly 990 kW or 1000 kW is reported. At a reported combat weight of 50 metric tonnes, that would imply roughly 19.8–20 kW/t, or about 26.5–27 hp/t. This was excellent on paper and broadly competitive with late-Cold-War high-mobility MBTs. The engine model, transmission design, cooling system and front-pack integration are not publicly validated. Secondary technical pages describe a hydropneumatic or hydraulic suspension. This would fit the advanced character of the program and potentially improve firing stability and terrain adaptation in Swiss conditions. However, no reliable official suspension drawing has been located. Road range is sometimes reported around 300 km, but that figure remains uncertain. Sources

Because the concept centered on automated loading, most descriptions imply a three-man crew: commander, gunner and driver. A three-man crew would reduce protected volume and personnel demand but would increase maintenance and ammunition-handling burdens on a small crew. No NKPz-specific communications suite has been confirmed. Any production vehicle would have needed Swiss-compatible radios and command-network equipment, but fitting details are undocumented. For the later Leopard 2 evaluation, public secondary accounts mention Swiss-specific radio changes on test vehicles, illustrating how national communications integration was a procurement issue. No active protection or soft-kill system has been confirmed. Smoke grenade launchers, NBC protection and fire suppression would be expected on a late-1970s MBT proposal but cannot be specified beyond that without qualification. Sources

The biggest known weakness was program risk rather than demonstrated mechanical failure. The NKPz inherited political risk from the Panzer 68 scandal, technical risk from its ambitious layout and automated systems, and industrial risk from Switzerland’s small production base. A front-engine/autoloader MBT would also have carried developmental risks around cooling, turret packaging, loader reliability, ammunition safety, weight distribution and maintainability. Production, operators, and combat record

NKPz had no serial production. Its industrial significance instead lies in the attempted continuation of Swiss domestic armored-vehicle development. The named general contractor in the strongest public source is Contraves AG, operating under a GRD assignment. The likely wider Swiss industrial ecosystem would have included federal and private defense firms around Thun and related armament offices. The cited accounts do not firmly establish the exact workshare. Sources

The production problem was strategic as well as technical. Switzerland’s earlier Panzer 61/Panzer 68 line showed that indigenous tank production was possible, but the third-generation MBT era imposed higher demands: composite/special armor, advanced fire control, stabilized high-pressure gun systems, thermal imaging, improved engines and sophisticated logistics. For a small national fleet, research and development costs were difficult to spread over large production numbers. Sources

Public accounts consistently frame the cancellation as a risk decision. Under the shadow of Panzer 68 defects and controversy, the Federal Council judged the NKPz’s risks too high and suspended the program. That did not eliminate industrial participation; the Leopard 2 was ultimately procured as the Swiss Panzer 87, and Swiss official reporting emphasizes Swiss participation in the procurement. The NKPz had no operators in the military-service sense. Switzerland was the sponsor and intended user, but no vehicle entered troop service, training service or reserve inventory. The intended operational context was the replacement of Swiss Panzer 68 capability in the early 1990s and the broader replacement of aging armored fleets. Sources

The service-history story belongs primarily to the vehicles around NKPz. The Panzer 68 continued in service and underwent improvement, while the Panzer 87 Leopard 2 became Switzerland’s selected modern MBT. The Swiss Armed Forces’ 2025 armament program still discusses maintenance and service-life issues for Panzer 87 Leopard WE, illustrating the long-term consequence of choosing the Leopard family rather than domestic NKPz production. The NKPz has no combat history. It was never issued to a unit, never mobilized, never exported, never captured and never used in war. Any claim about its combat superiority over Leopard 2, M1 Abrams or Soviet contemporaries is therefore a counterfactual assessment based on design claims rather than operational evidence. Sources

The most defensible combat-relevant observations are conceptual. A 120 mm smoothbore gun would have placed NKPz in the high-firepower class of late-1970s Western MBTs. A three-man crew and autoloader could have reduced silhouette and protected volume, but could also have complicated battlefield maintenance and ammunition replenishment. A front engine might have aided crew survival in some frontal hits but could have immobilized the tank more readily if the nose was struck and might have created cooling and thermal-signature challenges. Because Switzerland did not fight armored combat in the period, there are no Swiss battlefield reports to validate the Panzer 68-to-NKPz-to-Panzer 87 progression. There was no operational combat history; the vehicle remained a development project. Sources

Legacy and historical evidence

The most relevant contemporaries are the Leopard 2, M1 Abrams and, at the broader design-concept level, other late-1970s/early-1980s MBTs such as Challenger 1, Merkava, AMX-40 and later Leclerc. Public summaries describe the Swiss choice as narrowing to Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams. Sources

NKPz’s most important legacy is institutional. Its cancellation marked the effective end of Switzerland’s attempt to field a wholly domestic main battle tank after the Panzer 61/68 lineage. The design also lives as a “what if” in armor history. Its reported front-engine layout, compact turret, 120 mm gun and automated ammunition handling make it more interesting than many paper tanks. Some modern enthusiasts present it as a visionary design; the more careful conclusion is that it was technologically ambitious but unproven. There is not enough evidence to rank it above fielded contemporaries because it did not complete the cycle of prototype trials, production engineering, troop testing and logistic maturation. Sources

For Swiss defense history, NKPz is best treated as a procurement fork: one path led to high-risk domestic autonomy; the other led to proven foreign technology and Swiss industrial participation through licensed production and maintenance. The Federal Council chose the second path. Sources

Surviving vehicles are not known because no complete NKPz vehicle is confirmed. Surviving material may include archival plans, photographs of the wooden model, scans of contemporary articles and possibly model-related images. The highest-value research target is therefore documentation rather than a museum vehicle. Sources
