Overview and classification

The Neubaufahrzeug was a German multi-turret experiment combining two main guns with smaller machine-gun turrets. Published accounts recognize five vehicles: two soft-steel prototypes and three armored examples. It never entered large-scale production, although photographs and propaganda made it appear more numerous. Sources

Classification is not entirely consistent. Some source records call it a heavy tank, while others describe a medium or support-tank experiment. “Prototype multi-turret tank” preserves the common ground without erasing that disagreement. Pz.Kpfw. V/VI designations in secondary or propaganda-related accounts did not identify the later Panther and Tiger. They do not establish a direct technical lineage to those vehicles. Sources

Development and competing arrangements

The Neubaufahrzeug combined a short 7.5 cm gun for support targets, a 3.7 cm gun for armor, and machine guns. Concept work preceded 1934; accounts record a change from mittlerer Traktor to Neubau Fahrzeug in 1933, although exact program nomenclature varies. Sources

Rheinmetall and Krupp contributed different turret solutions. The best-known distinction is mechanical and visible: one arrangement placed the 3.7 cm gun above the 7.5 cm gun; the other placed the guns side by side. These configurations is distinct from the separate distinction between soft-steel trial vehicles and armored examples. Published accounts describe both ways of grouping the program, but the precise mapping of every turret to each hull remains a review issue. Sources

The concept grew beyond its early weight expectations. A vehicle of about twenty-three tonnes, carrying several turrets and two main weapons, imposed substantial crew and automotive demands. Trials and the move toward more specialized tank programs limited the case for further production. Accounts describe the B.W. support-tank path as part of the subsequent design context, not as another version of the same five vehicles. Sources

Hull, turrets and firepower

A large central turret was accompanied by two smaller machine-gun turrets. The arrangement promised several fields of fire but complicated internal movement and coordination. With six crew in the source specification, the tank still required the main-turret personnel to manage different weapons and ammunition types. A list of guns is therefore not a direct measure of how effectively those weapons could be operated together. Sources

The principal main-armament combination is a 7.5 cm L/24 gun and a 3.7 cm gun. The available evidence does not support presenting a fitted 10.5 cm gun as an established feature. That claim remains a question about proposals, interpretation or source error. Sources

Soft-steel construction served trials rather than combat protection. The armored vehicles are listed with relatively thin armor, approximately 8–20 mm across the source description. Those figures cannot be assigned to the soft-steel prototypes merely because external appearance was similar. Likewise, turret arrangement and construction material are not interchangeable variant names. Exact sighting equipment, radio types and some internal installation details remain insufficiently documented in the available accounts. Sources

Automotive system and trial limitations

The specifications associate the tank with a 290 hp BMW Va engine, a rear automotive arrangement and a road speed of about 30 km/h. A nominal road range of about 120 km is recorded, but it is not a documented measure of campaign endurance under all conditions. Sources

Running gear, steering and transmission imposed practical limits on the multi-turret concept. Accounts emphasize trial difficulties and the complexity of operating the vehicle rather than claiming a quantified fleet reliability rate from five examples. Photographs of a workshop or a tank under repair may illustrate the maintenance setting; they cannot independently establish a production rate, average breakdown interval or universal mechanical defect. Production and the five-vehicle boundary

The common production sequence separates two soft-steel prototypes from three armored vehicles completed in the mid-1930s. It records no subsequent series manufacture. The competing the cited accounts groups—Rheinmetall/Krupp on one hand and mild-steel/armored on the other—describe overlapping attributes of that small program. Adding those rows together would double-count the same vehicles. Sources

Germany is the documented operator. No export or licensed-production program is established, and the account does not identify a dedicated recovery, bridge-laying or command variant. The absence of such records are not an invitation to infer them from later German tank families. Industrial and prototype records are needed to resolve the finer turret-attribution questions within the five-vehicle total. Sources

Norway and subsequent uncertainty

Three armored vehicles were sent to Norway in 1940, associated with a special platoon under Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V.40. Their arrival and public display generated a substantial photographic record. Sources

The small force’s military significance is separate from its propaganda value. These were real deployed vehicles, not a purely fictional heavy-tank formation, but three tanks were not a mass armored capability. The cited accounts do not firmly establish exact loss circumstances, later training use, scrapping and eastern-front stories. None is silently converted into a confirmed post-Norway service sequence here. Sources

No complete surviving vehicle is established in the cited sources. Reports of surviving parts and local remains are potentially useful leads. These details remain unconfirmed in the cited evidence. A component attributed to Neubaufahrzeug cannot acquire an exact hull identity without evidence connecting the object to that vehicle. Sources

Historical assessment and imagery

The Neubaufahrzeug illustrates the difficulty of combining several weapon roles in a complex multi-turret vehicle. It contributed design and trials experience, but direct inheritance by particular later tanks is not conclusively established. Sources

Its illustrated history also requires restraint. Oslo views document a limited deployed group; workshop photographs may show several different tank types; and the best-known photographs do not necessarily show the earliest gun arrangement. A comprehensive gallery therefore needs configuration variety and careful captions more than several near-repeated views of the same harbor scene. Sources
