The K1 modernized family covers the post-1996 evolution of South Korea's K1 88-Tank lineage.

Historical overview

The K1 modernized family covers the post-1996 evolution of South Korea's K1 88-Tank lineage. The baseline K1 entered public service in the late 1980s as a South Korean-produced main battle tank shaped by U.S. design assistance and by South Korea's need to offset North Korean armored mass with a smaller but technically superior force. K1E1 is the upgrade path for original 105 mm K1 tanks. Hanwha Systems announced in 2021 that it began development of a K1E1 upgraded gunner's sight system under a DAPA contract, with development planned through 2025 and a target of K2-level gunner-sight performance. Design and performance

K1-family tanks use a conventional four-crew MBT layout: driver in the hull front, commander/gunner/loader in the turret, and a rear diesel powerpack. The line retained manual loading and did not adopt the K2's three-crew autoloaded layout.
