Hotchkiss H35 / H38 / H39

The Hotchkiss light-tank family combined a compact two-man layout with substantial cast protection for its size.

The family and its names

The Hotchkiss light-tank family combined a compact two-man layout with substantial cast protection for its size. Its development belongs to France's search for a small, affordable armored vehicle, followed by employment across cavalry and infantry formations. The available evidence treats the original H35 and the improved 1939 vehicle together because their development, turret arrangements, and service histories overlap. Sources

The familiar H35, H38, and H39 labels are not three equally clear official production identities. The references identify H38 as an informal or inconsistent usage and retains the formal improved-model terminology where supported. The familiar names do not necessarily correspond to clear-cut production-series boundaries. Development and the stronger engine

The early program proceeded through prototypes, trials, and adoption before the H35 entered series manufacture. The published chronology distinguishes the prototype and order stages from the later delivery of production vehicles. It then follows the move to an improved model with a more powerful engine and altered rear engine deck. Those changes addressed mobility, but did not remove the fundamental limitations of a small crew and one-man turret. Sources

The improved model was associated with 1939 acceptance and production, while armament improvement followed its own schedule. A stronger engine did not mean that every vehicle immediately received the longer 37 mm SA38 gun. The precise production and rearmament chronology remains disputed. Prototype dates and acceptance dates remain source assertions pending the corresponding original documents; they cannot be compressed into one universal introduction year simply because the source chronology uses 1935. Cast protection and a crowded fighting arrangement

The driver occupied the front of the hull and the commander worked alone in the APX turret. He had to observe, direct the driver, select targets, load, aim, and fire. that concentration of tasks is described as a major practical limitation, especially when movement and changing tactical circumstances increased the demand for observation and command. Protection and armament alone do not capture that workload. Sources

Cast armor sections formed a compact rounded hull, with maximum protection commonly reported around 40 mm. This was significant for a 1930s light tank, but a maximum value does not describe every face, joint, or opening and cannot establish invulnerability to antitank fire. The improved engine required a visibly raised rear deck. Museum views can help show this geometry, provided that the exact specimen and any later changes are identified rather than assumed to represent an untouched production standard. Sources

Gun fits, ammunition, and mobility

The short 37 mm SA18 was the normal early gun. Its high-explosive role and limited antitank capability differed from those of the later SA38. Both used 37 mm ammunition, but their ballistic performance and associated stowage figures cannot be combined. Published accounts give alternative gun-round allowances and the approximately 2,400-round machine-gun figure with source qualifications. The standard French coaxial weapon was a 7.5 mm MAC31/Reibel type. Sources

The H35's engine is generally given as 75 hp, while the improved model's output rises to 120 hp. Road speed improved accordingly, but the practical cross-country and sustained operating envelope was not simply the maximum road figure. Bogie suspension and track details changed over the production history. Radios, observation arrangements, and sighting equipment also remain uncertain; an equipment drawing or preserved exhibit cannot reliably give every vehicle an identical service fit. Sources

Production and captured conversions

Accounts record approximately 400 H35s and a wider family total commonly placed between about 1,100 and 1,200, with an alternative accounting of roughly 1,110 including about 710 improved-model vehicles. These totals need a defined distinction between completed tanks, deliveries, prototypes, and later alterations. Sources

German use produced a second layer of designations and specialized vehicles after the French campaign. Command, artillery, antitank, and observation conversions reused donor chassis rather than constituting additional French tank production. A vehicle rebuilt into a self-propelled gun also needs its actual role stated; its existence does not create another turreted light-tank model. Sources

French operations and the Norwegian detachment

The 1940 campaign demonstrated both the value and limitations of the Hotchkiss family. Protection and a useful weapon could give a tank a local advantage, but coordination, observation, mechanical condition, and crew workload still governed what it could achieve. The single-man turret imposed demands that cannot be explained by armor thickness alone. The available evidence does not provide a complete family-wide loss ledger by cause, so photographs of disabled tanks is not established as a statistical sample. Sources

The Norwegian detachment provides a more specific service thread. The account follows the H39s sent to Norway, their withdrawal to Britain, and the later Free French connection through the Gabon and Syrian campaigns. Other operators and the limits of comparison

The account includes Bulgaria and Israel among the subjects to investigate, but broad operator lists cannot replace a delivery or custody record for a particular vehicle. Museum preservation is similarly different from service issue: the location of a tank today does not establish when or how that country acquired it. Sources

The original and improved Hotchkiss configurations had different capabilities. Engine power, gun installation, protection, crew workload, and communications affected different aspects of performance. The published comparative assessment supports that multidimensional approach; it does not justify a simple ranking based on whichever model has the thickest quoted plate or longest gun.
