Overview
The Gun Carrier Mark I was designed to transport heavy field artillery on a tracked vehicle, extending mechanization beyond the gun-armed fighting tank. Its intended loads included a 60-pounder gun or a 6-inch howitzer. The same basic family also served as a supply carrier, while two vehicles in the program were assigned to salvage work with cranes. The account discusses the familiar description of the machine as an early production form of self-propelled artillery. That description remains uncertain: carrying a gun, being able to fire a particular installation, and regularly firing from the carrier in combat are different propositions. Requirement and development
It records work on modified drawings for a 60-pounder carrier, a model presented to the Ordnance Committee, and participation by Wilson and a Metropolitan Company officer whose name appears as Greg or Gregg in the available evidence trail. Instructions called for fifty machines. Sources
The production story later separates forty-eight gun carriers from two salvage vehicles. That split belongs to the same original order rather than a fifty-carrier order with two additional hulls. Prototype and trial accounts place development activity across late 1916 and early 1917, but exact milestones remains uncertain. Fuller is used separately for arrival and operational availability in France. Arrangement and the artillery load
The machine placed its load on a forward platform with protected driving positions and the power plant toward the rear. Its appearance and load-handling requirements differed substantially from the enclosed sponson-armed heavy tank. Machinery, crew, and load accounting
A Daimler six-cylinder petrol engine of about 105 bhp powered the carrier. Its machinery drew on the existing British tracked-vehicle program, with a low nominal speed of around 4 mph. Those figures describe a slow heavy support vehicle, not a fast transport capable of sustaining the pace of ordinary road traffic across a battlefield. Sources
The accounts distinguish a vehicle crew of four from a larger complement when artillery personnel are included. A reported total involving the gun detachment cannot establish the standard crew of an unarmed supply carrier. Stern's cited load descriptions include 64 rounds with the gun or howitzer and 130 rounds for an ammunition-only arrangement. Fuller and an Australian War Memorial record describe 200 six-inch shells weighing approximately ten tons in a supply context. These figures are preserved with their source and configuration. Production and service organization
Published figures separates the original order, the forty-eight gun-carrier allocation, the two salvage machines, and the forty-four recorded as received in France by the end of 1917. Conversion to supply use could change a vehicle's role without creating another hull. Sources
British service on the Western Front is the established operational setting. The account does not confirm foreign operational users or a long-lived postwar fleet. That is a limit of the consulted evidence, not proof that no further archival record can exist. Sources
Fuller's account describes the conversion of the two Gun Carrier Companies into Supply Companies during June 1918. This organizational change is central to explaining what the vehicles actually did. Operational use
The operational narrative begins with carriers arriving for experiment in Flanders before the Third Battle of Ypres. The published Fuller material describes ammunition transport and some gun movement over difficult ground. A secondary claim associating the vehicle's first use with Cambrai remains to be checked against that earlier account; first arrival, first supply work, and first firing in action cannot be conflated. For Hamel on 4 July 1918, the account cites four machines carrying roughly twenty to twenty-five tons of Royal Engineers material. The accompanying comparison with a large carrying party is Fuller's estimate, not a modern measured manpower calculation. Photographs provide complementary evidence of the service roles. Kingston is shown being revictualled at Miraumont on 26 August 1918, while another image shows a damaged carrier photographed in 1919. The latter date identifies the photograph, not necessarily the destruction event. Historical significance and open questions
The Gun Carrier Mark I brought tracked transport to the problem of sustaining firepower and carrying heavy loads forward. Its most strongly documented contribution in the present account is logistical. Describing it only as an ancestor of modern self-propelled guns would understate that practical service history.
