Overview and classification
The Großkampfwagen, usually shortened to K-Wagen, was a German attempt to create a very large armored breakthrough vehicle during the First World War. Its intended combination of heavy protection, several guns and a large crew belonged to the landship tradition rather than to the compact turreted arrangement of the Renault FT. The project advanced beyond a paper proposal: construction began and substantial assemblies existed. It nevertheless did not produce a demonstrated operational tank, enter unit service, or fight. The accounts distinguish a ten-vehicle order from the much smaller quantity that approached completion. Common accounts describe two substantially built or nearly completed vehicles, but the exact state of each hull is not securely harmonized. Requirement, timing, and industrial context
German interest in a superheavy assault machine developed in 1917, before the British tank concentration at Cambrai. The account accordingly rejects a simple origin story in which Cambrai caused the K-Wagen project. Trench systems, defended strongpoints and the problem of sustaining infantry through a breakthrough already provided a context for considering protected mobile firepower on this scale. Sources
The account names several participants in the design and procurement process, including Weger, Vollmer and Müller, but warns against assigning the entire vehicle to a single inventor without examining the administrative record. Its working chronology distinguishes a March submission, an April decision and a June order in 1917. Those are useful research anchors, not interchangeable dates for a completed design. An initial concept commonly associated with approximately 150–165 tonnes gave way to a shortened arrangement around 120 tonnes. Proposed weapons and power arrangements also evolved. Accounts record an early flamethrower idea that did not remain part of the later standard description. Hull, transport, and protection
The proposed vehicle used a long tracked hull with large side sponsons rather than a rotating main turret. The arrangement distributed weapons around a protected fighting space. It also made the vehicle extremely wide and cumbersome relative to the transport and recovery infrastructure expected to support it. Description of the hull needs to remain tied to a specified drawing or stage because surviving accounts do not all depict an identical final arrangement. Sources
Breaking the vehicle into large transport sections was central to making such a machine deployable. Published accounts give accounts describing four principal sections and others referring to six modules. These descriptions may concern different ways of dividing the structure, but that explanation has not been demonstrated. Disassembly for rail transport would not, by itself, establish that a complete operational transport system had been tested. Sources
Protection figures also differ. A frequently repeated maximum of about 30 mm sits alongside an account of a front made from two 20 mm layers. Those values cannot be averaged or quietly combined into one definitive armor scheme. They may describe different proposals or interpretations; the relevant design drawings and construction records are needed before assigning thicknesses to every face of the hull. Sources
Weapons, power, and the proposed crew
The later reconstructed armament generally consists of four 7.7 cm guns and seven machine guns, with the heavier weapons distributed through the side sponsons. Published accounts describe exact gun and mounting nomenclature cautiously. Frequently quoted ammunition allowances are planning figures rather than an audited load recovered from a vehicle in service. The arrangement promised several firing arcs, but it also required many men to observe, communicate, load and aim inside a large enclosed hull. Sources
The usual final power description is a pair of Daimler or DMG marine engines rated at roughly 650 horsepower each. A combined output around 1,300 horsepower is a proposed installation, not evidence of successful prolonged operation in the completed tank. Sources
A crew of twenty-seven appears most commonly, while another figure of twenty-two also circulates. Crew totals and role assignments require the same configuration control as armor or engine figures. Projected speeds near 7.5–8 km/h and power-to-weight calculations derived from proposed mass and power are not trial results. Construction, procurement, and non-service
Riebe and Wegmann appear in the production narrative, with the order commonly divided between the two firms. The surviving summaries do not provide a complete, agreed hull-by-hull ledger. Accounts report Riebe vehicles nearing completion and Wegmann bodywork, although their exact completion states remain uncertain. A contract for ten tanks is not evidence that ten tanks existed, and an incomplete armored body is not automatically a completed prototype. Sources
The quoted cost around 600,000 marks is best treated as a budget or estimate within the procurement history, not a verified final unit cost calculated from completed vehicles. The project consumed engineering, manufacturing and material effort while Germany was also supporting other wartime priorities. Its scale helps explain the interest it attracted, but does not establish that it could have been produced, transported and maintained in effective numbers. Sources
The war ended before the program yielded a combat-ready vehicle. There was consequently no operational crew experience, battlefield damage record or enemy tactical assessment of the K-Wagen. Postwar dismantling belongs to the fate of the incomplete project; it is not established as the retirement of a tank fleet. Sources
Historical assessment and the surviving visual record
The K-Wagen is a useful case study in the difference between a promising set of weapons and a complete military system. Its proposed protection and multiple guns cannot be evaluated independently of transport, bridges, ground bearing, recovery, crew coordination and the ability to supply such a machine. These are analytical questions raised by the design, not failures measured in combat or in a completed trial program. Sources
Comparisons with other large tanks can clarify the design problem, but they cannot create an unsupported genealogy. In particular, a later German superheavy tank is not evidence of direct descent merely because both projects were unusually large. Sources
