Cruiser Tank Mk I / A9

The Cruiser Tank Mk I, commonly called A9, was an early British production cruiser intended to combine mobility and anti-tank firepower at a price compatible with interwar budgets.

Overview and identity

The Cruiser Tank Mk I, commonly called A9, was an early British production cruiser intended to combine mobility and anti-tank firepower at a price compatible with interwar budgets. Its central gun turret and two smaller machine-gun turrets gave it a distinctive appearance. The vehicle is described as an important transitional design rather than a successful answer to every requirement of mobile warfare: its useful gun and relatively high road speed were accompanied by thin protection, a large crew and mechanical limitations. The principal family members are the A9E1 prototype, the production 2-pounder tank and the close-support A9 CS. The cited accounts entries under both Cruiser A9 and Cruiser Mk I refer to overlapping identities, not separate production programs. Similarly, a duplicate CS record is an indexing issue. Requirements and development

The project emerged from a search for a less expensive medium or cruiser tank. Mobility, an effective anti-tank weapon and affordable manufacture were central concerns. Commercially derived automotive equipment offered one route to keeping costs down, while the multiple-turret arrangement retained an older conception of distributing machine-gun fire around the hull. The resulting vehicle was an interim step between interwar experimentation and the more specialized cruiser designs that followed. Sources

Accounts place the formal requirement in June 1934 and the A9E1 prototype in 1936. It associates the project with Vickers, John Carden and Leslie Little, while treating some detailed attribution as dependent on secondary literature. Trials included changes to the powerplant and attention to excessive weight, suspension and track problems. The production tank differed in hull-front arrangement, visibility and other fittings. Reports of an unsuccessful underwater experiment concern the prototype; they do not make the standard A9 a watertight or amphibious vehicle. Sources

Layout, protection and crew

A central gun turret dominated the upper hull. Forward of it, two small machine-gun turrets flanked the driver's position. The six-man crew comprised the commander, gunner, loader, driver and two machine gunners. Those additional stations increased the number of men to accommodate and coordinate inside a lightly protected hull; they are distinct from a larger main-turret crew. Sources

Protection was modest. The source describes predominantly flat bolted or riveted plates and gives roughly 6–14 mm as the armor range. A maximum-thickness figure is not a description of every plate or an assurance of survival against anti-tank fire. Accounts emphasize cramped stations, vulnerable openings and the exposed complexity of the forward arrangement. Its references to powered main-turret traverse remain unconfirmed before presenting a precise first-in-service claim or a universal mechanism specification. Sources

Armament and communications

The normal production vehicle mounted a 40 mm 2-pounder gun and three.303-inch Vickers machine guns: one associated with the main turret and one in each forward turret. The account regards the gun as useful against early armored opponents, but notes the absence of a useful high-explosive capability in the relevant service context. The gun tank therefore is not established as equally suited to every infantry-support target. Sources

The close-support version substituted a howitzer and emphasized smoke provision, with an additional high-explosive allowance reported in the available evidence. Its exact ammunition mix remains a manual-level question, not a value to borrow from a later British close-support tank. The normal gun-tank figures of approximately 100 main-gun rounds and 3,000 machine-gun rounds also retain their source qualifications. Automotive performance and reliability

The production powerplant is identified as an AEC A179 petrol engine of about 150 hp, with five forward gears and one reverse. The bogie suspension and its springing differs from the Christie system used on later cruiser families. The source gives approximately 25 mph on roads and lower cross-country performance, but these are specification values rather than a promise of sustained campaign speed. Sources

Reliability assessments vary with setting. Accounts record poor mechanical results in some French operations but more favorable comments on the engine in desert service. That disagreement remains unresolved rather than being compressed into a single verdict. Track retention, suspension behavior, cooling, maintenance access and the availability of spares all belong to the readiness story. A mobile tank on a specification sheet could still become unavailable through breakdown, transport difficulties or damage that a unit could not repair promptly. Sources

Production and configuration accounting

The working production total is 125, divided in the cited sources between 50 Vickers vehicles and 75 from Harland & Wolff. This is a manufacturing total, not a count of tanks ready for action in a particular month. Sources

Design and prototype work preceded the principal production deliveries. The source distinguishes ordering or acceptance during 1937–1938 from deliveries chiefly in 1939–1940, while noting accounts that carry completion into 1941. Factory-specific statements and broader summaries cannot be silently reconciled by choosing the latest date. No complete cost series or monthly acceptance ledger is established here. Museum custody in Britain or India likewise does not, on its own, establish the latter country as an operational A9 user. Sources

Service and historical assessment

Accounts place the A9 in the 1940 French campaign, including the commitment at Calais, and in British operations in the Middle East. Its cited Tank Museum account gives 24 A9s lost in the Calais fighting and 70 sent to the Middle East. Those statements require their own definitions and context: losses in one operation, theater shipments and total manufacture are not interchangeable measures. Sources

The desert narrative includes the early cruiser battles and later service through 1941. References to Greece are less secure at the A9 unit-and-vehicle level and remain qualified rather than being converted into a detailed deployment claim. The A9's significance lies in the practical move toward a cruiser force and the compromises that move exposed. It combined a useful anti-tank gun with mobility, but its protection and multi-turret arrangement imposed substantial limitations. Surviving examples and restored finishes can illustrate its design only when their individual histories are kept separate from combat photographs. Sources
