A family built around two principal weapons
The Char B1 family combined a hull-mounted 75 mm weapon with a smaller gun in a rotating turret. It grew from a French battle-tank requirement and reached service in several materially different forms. The B1, B1 bis, and B1 ter had related designs but distinct protection, turrets, and development histories. Sources

A flame conversion, self-propelled artillery adaptation, or recovered post-liberation vehicle may deserve a related article, but it does not add a newly manufactured French tank to the original production total. From the battle-tank requirement to B1 production
The account traces the requirement to Estienne's 1921 battle-tank program. The concept emphasized a powerful hull weapon for attacking defended positions and a turret weapon that could address other targets. Integrating that arrangement, its steering system, armor, and industrial production took years. The account distinguishes competing heavier proposals from the vehicle that ultimately became the B1. Trials at Mourmelon in 1931 and adoption in 1934 are separate milestones from subsequent series deliveries. The original B1 combined its hull gun with the APX 1 turret and early 47 mm armament, with armor generally described as reaching 40 mm. The later B1 bis increased protection and used the APX 4 turret with the more capable SA 35 gun. The B1 ter sought further development, including thicker protection and changes affecting operation of the hull gun. Proposed production arrangements and turret plans are separate from the equipment actually fitted to prototypes. The hull gun and steering system
The 75 mm gun sat low in the hull with a restricted horizontal field. The driver helped aim it by positioning the vehicle, making steering precision a fighting requirement rather than merely a mobility feature. The Naeder system is therefore central to understanding the design. Accounts describe an arrangement in which driving and gun laying were closely connected, rather than a conventional independently traversing hull turret. Sources
The tank's long track runs, suspension, hull layout, and rear automotive compartment served a heavily protected fighting vehicle, but they also introduced maintenance demands. Lubrication, adjustment, cooling, and access mattered to unit readiness. Its silhouette alone does not explain either its tactical potential or its support burden. Sources
Crew, turret, protection, and ammunition
The standard B1/B1 bis fighting crew numbered four. The commander in the turret nevertheless carried a substantial workload, combining observation, command, and operation of the turret gun. Adding a hull gun did not remove that concentration of duties. Published accounts describe the one-man turret as an important operational constraint even when the tank's armor and weapons compared favorably with opponents. Sources
The B1 bis is generally associated with about 60 mm frontal and 55 mm side protection, while the B1 had a thinner scheme and the B1 ter proposed further increases. Likewise, the 75 mm and 47 mm ammunition capacities are not automatically identical across turret installations and batches. Sources
Automotive figures around 300–307 horsepower for the B1 bis and published road speeds in the mid-to-upper twenties of kilometers per hour describe nominal capability, not continuous tactical endurance. Fuel availability, maintenance, road movement, and the recovery of damaged vehicles shaped actual operations. Radio models and the chronology of equipment changes are not fully established. Sources
Orders, deliveries, and disputed totals
The account separates large production orders from the smaller number completed before the collapse of 1940. For B1 bis it records 1,144 ordered and 369 built, together with a rapidly changing delivery rate. Late production was complicated by hull completion, turret availability, and differing definitions of a completed tank. These categories remains unconfirmed before reproducing a single unqualified delivery total. Sources
The broader family count is not fully reconciled. The available evidence includes 34 or 35 original B1s depending on how prototypes are treated, a family total around 405 in one account, and separate B1 ter prototype claims. Those assertions cannot be made consistent simply by adding an undocumented vehicle. Prototypes, accepted vehicles, deliveries, conversions, and incomplete hulls account for different parts of the production record. French combat and later use
The B1 and B1 bis served with French armored formations in 1940. Their protection and weapons could be formidable in local engagements, but tactical outcomes also depended on reconnaissance, coordination, fuel, repair, and recovery. Accounts describe the gap between individual fighting strength and the ability to keep armored units operating coherently through a fast-moving campaign. Sources
The account of Eure at Stonne is a notable example of the vehicle's combat reputation. Older B1s also are separate questions, including later weapon changes and worn mechanical condition. Rearmament did not automatically turn an original B1 into a newly built B1 bis. Sources
Captured vehicles entered German inventories and specialized roles under German designations. Published accounts describe French recovery and reuse after liberation, including the re-formed 13e Dragons and fighting in 1945. Variant coverage and photographs
The original B1, production B1 bis, and experimental B1 ter were distinct stages in the family, separate from later conversions. German flamethrower and artillery conversions performed different roles from the original gun tanks. Individual names such as Ouragan or Béarn identify particular vehicles and histories, not automatically additional variants. Sources
The images favor the B1 bis and a German flame conversion. Two images concern Béarn II in different media, rather than documenting two different tanks or providing an interior view. The museum photograph is a modern display record, while a wartime photograph of a captured vehicle answers a different historical question. Missing photographs of the original B1, B1 ter, or interior remain genuine gaps even though the family already has several usable-looking exterior images. Sources
Assessment
The family illustrates a demanding balance between protection, armament, crew workload, and mechanical support. Its powerful local fighting capability does not justify a claim that it was tactically invulnerable, and the defeat of France does not make every individual action a technical failure.
