BT fast tank family

The BT family placed high mobility at the center of a Soviet tank program derived from Christie's convertible-drive concept.

Overview and identity

The BT family placed high mobility at the center of a Soviet tank program derived from Christie's convertible-drive concept. Its large road wheels, spring suspension and ability to operate with tracks removed made it visually and mechanically distinct from the T-26. Published accounts describe the BT-2, BT-5, BT-7, artillery-support BT-7A and diesel-powered BT-7M as related but technically different subjects. Sources

The family was not one vehicle whose specifications changed only in the name. Weapon availability, turret design, hull construction, engine type, communications and production practice all evolved. The common lineage provides the framework for a family overview; substantial configurations still require their own articles. Sources

Christie origin and the Soviet sequence

The imported Christie vehicles provided a starting point, not a finished production system that could be reproduced without adaptation. The account separates the demonstrators from Soviet manufacture at the Kharkov works and from the later administrative and model names used in Soviet records. American design influence, imported vehicles, and Soviet factory production were separate stages in the BT's development. Sources

The BT-2 emerged in the early 1930s with a small turret and gun or machine-gun installations shaped partly by weapon supply. Accounts place the BT-5's 45 mm gun configuration in 1933 and the principal BT-7 development in the middle of the decade. Later turret and hull changes are meaningful configuration boundaries, even where popular descriptions use a single model label for several production states. Sources

The BT-7A added an artillery-support role with a different weapon installation. The diesel BT-7M, also associated with the BT-8 designation, introduced another important technical change late in the production sequence. Experiments such as BT-IS and BT-SV explored different mobility or protection arrangements, while A-20 and A-32 belong to the subsequent development path. Those projects are not automatically additional BT production variants. Sources

Convertible mobility and the power train

The running gear used large road wheels with springing associated with the Christie system. With tracks removed, the vehicle could travel on its wheels under suitable conditions. That was a distinct operating mode with its own controls, limitations and preparation requirements. It cannot be represented as an effortless change that offered maximum road speed everywhere. Track and wheel speeds need separate specification fields. Figures around the low fifties in kilometers per hour on tracks and above seventy on wheels appear in the published references, but they vary by model, loading and source. Sources

Engine installations changed substantially. The BT-2/BT-5 references commonly involve the M-5 or Liberty-derived engine at around 400 hp; the BT-7 is associated with M-17T ratings around 450–500 hp. The diesel BT-7M's published ratings also vary among 400, 450 and 500 hp in the available descriptions. Those disagreements remain unconfirmed. Sources

Weapons, protection and the crew

The three-man crew generally combined a driver with two men in the turret. A small turret team imposed a heavy workload on the commander, especially when operating a gun and maintaining awareness of other vehicles. Radio and antenna configurations changed over time and between roles, so the presence or absence of a conspicuous antenna is not a complete guide to the tank's model or operational function. Sources

Armament distinguishes several major branches. Early BT-2s are separate questions of the 37 mm gun and machine-gun arrangements. The 45 mm weapon of the BT-5 and ordinary BT-7 served a different purpose from the larger-caliber artillery installation of the BT-7A. Sources

Protection remained light relative to the tank's aspirations for high mobility. Published accounts describe varying thicknesses by plate and model rather than one uniform armor figure. Changes to hull and turret form improved selected aspects without removing vulnerability to antitank weapons. Reliability, cooling and the effect of accumulating modifications also belong in the technical account: a high nominal speed did not ensure sustained availability under combat conditions. Sources

Manufacturing at Kharkov involved significant bottlenecks in components, weapons and acceptance. Figures from these categories does not add together as though they were mutually exclusive finished vehicles. Sources

The working production record retains disputes such as 610 versus 620 BT-2s and differing BT-5 totals. BT-7 accounting is particularly sensitive to whether artillery and diesel vehicles are included in broader totals. The BT-7A figures around 150–155 and BT-7M figures around 788–790 require defined inclusion rules. Sources

Finland's BT-42 illustrates another accounting problem. Accounts describe eighteen conversions of captured BT-7 chassis into assault guns. Those were not eighteen newly manufactured Soviet BT tanks. The Finnish conversion combined a donor chassis with Finnish design work and different armament. The same rule applies to other rebuilding and experimental states: track the history of the vehicle, not simply the number of different names it acquired. Sources

Operators, campaigns and operational limits

The Soviet Union was the principal user. Detailed Spanish, Finnish, and other foreign service histories are not equally well documented. A period label covering the whole Spanish Civil War cannot establish that a specific model was present in every year of that war. Sources

The operational framework covers Spain, the fighting at Khalkhin Gol, the Winter War, the campaigns of 1941 and later employment in the Far East. These settings presented very different terrain, opposition and logistical conditions. The account stresses that speed alone did not compensate for inadequate cooperation, maintenance or information. Conversely, severe losses in one campaign do not prove that every vehicle was mechanically useless in all circumstances. Sources

The BT family's legacy includes industrial experience, crew training and technical experimentation that contributed to later tank development. The T-34 was a separate design rather than another BT variant, and its eventual success was not an inevitable consequence of a single inherited feature. Contemporary tests, actual deployment records and the differences between plans and field conditions remain central to a reliable account. Sources

Preservation and research boundaries

The image collection combines museum BT-5 and BT-7 views, Spanish and East Asian service photographs, a small image identified as BT-7M and the Finnish BT-42 survivor. Each illustrates a different part of the family story. Museum paint and restored fittings cannot establish an exact wartime unit configuration, and the BT-42 belongs in a derivative comparison rather than the Soviet production gallery without qualification.
